Mark Twain was born in the USA. When he was four, his family moved to Hannibal on the Mississippi River. It was an exciting place to live, and it gave Twain the material for his books in later years.
After his father died, Twain left school at the age of 12 to work and earn money. He had many different jobs before he started his writing career. He was a riverboat pilot on the great Mississippi River, a journalist, a teacher, and an inventor. When he worked as a journalist in Virginia, he changed his name to Mark Twain. He published his first novel in 1876.
